We are a group of average people with above average goals, like donating a kidney and doing the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim Challenge. We will be covering 24 miles with 6,400 feet of elevation gain to raise awareness and celebrate the power of organ donation!
My daughter Annie spent the better part of her youth hanging in barns and riding horses. The people she met became a second family and lifelong friends to both of us. Meaghan was one of the people she met at the barn. Meaghan was an excellent rider and at 4'10" a tiny but powerful young woman. Meaghan is a few years older than Annie and was always a positive influence with Annie's riding and horsemanship. In June of 2015, Meaghan posted on Facebook that her kidney was failing. I had known about her health issues, but never how serious it was. Within a few moments of seeing that post, I reached out to her donor center and began the screening process. In December 2015 I donated a kidney, via a paired exchange, to Meaghan. Donating had little effect on me but was life changing for Meaghan. She continues to be an accomplished horsewoman, and I am so happy to see her thriving!
Kidney Donor Athletes demonstrate how we are still strong and can continue physical and mental challenges. This year, I completed my first marathon in 13 years! I had so much fun, I looked for another challenge, and the Rim2Rim seemed perfect!
Through events like this, kidney donors can demonstrate how we are still strong and capable individuals!
